PALM BEACH
Arcadia sits at the northern end of Palm Beach, a few sandy steps from the water. The bay is one of Waiheke’s calmest: soft golden sand, usually gentle swell, and pockets of shade under pōhutukawa for long, lazy swims. From our doorstep you can wander the foreshore barefoot, watch paddleboarders slip past the headland, or spread a towel and let the afternoon drift by. Families love the easy entry and the space—there’s room for sandcastles, a quick splash between courses, or a sunset stroll before dessert.
Just behind the beach is the Palm Beach Reserve with its tidy playground and big grassy areas. It’s close enough that you can grab ice creams or coffees from Arcadia and wander back without losing your seat. A few minutes away, the community art gallery everyone calls the “Red Shed” shows work by local painters, ceramicists and sculptors. Exhibitions change often, so there’s nearly always something new to discover—and it’s a lovely way to fill a few quiet minutes while the table is set.
From our end of the bay a short coastal path leads to Little Palm, a smaller cove tucked beneath the headland. It’s a favourite for photos and a quick, quiet dip. Allow ten to fifteen minutes return and watch your footing after rain. If you’re in the mood to stretch out, follow the coastal network towards Hekerua Bay and the Oneroa side. Expect sea cliffs, birdsong and big views back across the Hauraki Gulf; depending on pace you’ll reach the Oneroa direction in about an hour or a bit more, and it’s easy to bus or taxi back for a late lunch. Prefer shops and a market browse? Walk the inland streets over gentle hills to Ostend (around forty minutes each way) and loop back here for a cold drink. Surfaces vary, so comfy shoes and a water bottle are wise; please keep to marked tracks and respect private property.
Getting here is simple. Buses run regularly between Matiatia Ferry Terminal, Oneroa, Ostend and Palm Beach; hop off near the reserve and wander a few minutes to us. Taxis and shuttles operate all day and can drop you at the door—handy for groups or when you’ve over-achieved on the coastal track. eBikes are a great way to link bays without the parking shuffle; the hills melt away and you’ll enjoy the scenery at your own pace. Locking spots are near the reserve—ride single file and be mindful that island roads can be narrow. If you’re driving, limited street parking is dotted around the reserve and nearby streets; on summer weekends it fills quickly, so public transport or eBikes can be calmer choices.
A few small tips from locals: the tide can make the beach feel wide and spacious or bring the water close to the trees—both are lovely, just plan your towel spot accordingly. The afternoon light on the northern headland is gorgeous; if you’re a photographer, keep the camera handy. Pack sunscreen, hats and water; Waiheke’s breeze can fool you on bright days. And if you’re swimming with children, keep them within arm’s reach—the bay is forgiving, but the sea is still the sea.
Whether you start your day here with coffee and a swim, drop in mid-adventure for something fresh and seasonal, or finish with a glass as the colours shift over the gulf, Arcadia is an easy home base for Palm Beach. Come as you are—salty, sandy, sun-kissed—and let us look after the rest.
